Promoting the Site
The mistake made by a lot of merchants is that if they open up a shop on the Internet and register their website with the major search engines, they will start making money. Unless the product is something very unusual, this is unfortunately unlikely to be the case. The major reason for this is because search engines are now saturated with websites selling every conceivable product. If you are selling widgets, then it is likely that there are also thousands of other stores also selling widgets. However, there are things you can do to get your store noticed.
Search Engines
Right now there is only one search engine worth mentioning - Google. This is because Google is most people's 'gateway to the internet' and it is by far the most widely used search engine. If you can get a high ranking in Google, then you are practically guaranteed business success. Unfortunately though, the reason Google is so good is also the reason why it is so difficult to get a high ranking. See the Google page for more details.
Traditional Marketing Methods
It is important not to overlook traditional marketing methods when promoting your website. If you already advertise your business, then make sure that all of your adverts contain your web address. If you don't advertise already, then consider advertising in magazines or other printed publications. Where you advertise really depends on the nature of the products you are selling. Some products are better promoted using traditional marketing methods, whereas others achieve more success from marketing on the Internet.
