What is involved in the initial development?
- You will need a design. This can either be developed for you or the site can be based on a design of your choosing. Graphics and content will be required from you. If you wish, graphics can be produced by Keerim Design and photographs taken and processed where required. Inevitably there is a cost implication. You may have much of this available from existing printed brochures.
- The Web site will be developed using the latest Web Standards techniques. The code is all written by hand and will be quick to download for potential customers and will comply with accessibility guidelines.
- Content Management Systems are the only way to go with e-Commerce sites. CMS is a program that provides the framework for the site. Keerim Design works directly with Cobra-cms, which is an excellent content management system. Simply put, all of the pages are stored on a database and they can be created easily, retrieved and modified at will, removed and reinstalled as required (for example - seasonal goods) either by Keerim Design or yourself. If your site is not Content Managed the on-costs are potentially huge, because designer time is probably the most expensive part of the process. For more details of Cobra-cms, see the link on the main menu.
- You will need a domain name, something.com or .co.uk or .eu. The cost is trivial, but getting the right name can take some time. It will also give you the opportunity to have e-mail accounts with your domain.
- You will need hosting. The site will have to be published to a Web server somewhere in the world. Keerim Design not believe in looking for the cheapest option. What is required is a stable service that is easy to contact in the event of something going wrong. Too many cheap services are in the States and are only contactable by e-mail. Your business is important, so keeping it running 24/7 is very important.
In addition you will need a number of 'static' pages for 'Terms & Conditions', 'Privacy & Security', 'Delivery Options', 'Newsletter Sign Up', 'FAQs' etc.
You might also like nice options like 'Tell a Friend', 'My Wish List', etc., but remember this is intended to be a cost-effective solution - not a rival to Amazon.
Also, be aware of the fact that there is a very large requirement on the client to produce the content for the site on time. The more you want, the greater will be the demands on you or your staff to deliver.
Motto: Be realistic and do it well!
